Weekly Roundup – 29th September

Last Thursday night started with applause for Peter Easton,  whose photograph of Crail Harbour filled the In The Picture spot in the Falkirk Herald.

Near the end of last Thursday’s evening,  “ One of the best Member’s Nights ….. “,  was just one comment.  Strange as it may sound,  we rarely take photographs on a Thursday night.  We look at and discuss them,  we welcome highly accomplished photographers and learn from their expertise,  we sometimes look at post-processing but we rarely produce photographs ourselves on a Thursday night.

Parallel with that,  the days when camera club or photographic society photographers solely used Reflex cameras are long past.  DSLR and Mirrorless cameras are still prevalent,  but we also use Compact or Bridge cameras and we also now use the cameras in Smartphones.  Only 3 decades ago photographing after dark required either a tripod or an electronic flash.  These days most cameras,  or smartphones,  will photograph in very low lighting conditions without any aids.  In fact later this year we have a talk from a visiting photographer on using the camera in smartphones.  Therefore,  we had an hour on Thursday night to take a single photograph on a Smartphone,  either around the environs of Trinity Church,  or around Falkirk Town Centre.

The resultant photographs included street lit scenes,  photographs around the historic graveyard of Trinity Church,  and photographs taken within the building.  We suspect this won’t be the last time we hold such an exercise.

Thursday 3rd October is the hand-in date for the first Monthly Competition of this season and also for this season’s Knockout Competition.  The file size of all entries should not exceed 1600 x 1200 pixels so we finished Thursday night by refreshing our memories on altering file sizes.

Also on 3rd October we welcome accomplished Landscape and Macro photographer Richard Fox. From landscapes in Scotland and Dartmoor to storm chasing in the U.S.A.,  to photographs of Moths and Butterflies,  this promises to be a fascinating evening.
