Talking Pictures
Last week we welcomed our friends from Falkirk Writers Circle for the annual Talking Pictures evening. This joint event began almost 35 years ago as an exhibition when pieces of writing from Falkirk W.C., inspired by photographs from Falkirk C.C., were displayed alongside the photographic Print.
It’s now a live event so, in front of the projected photograph, the photographer takes a few minutes to explain a little about their motivation for producing it and is followed by the writer who reads their poetry or prose. Several months ago we gave the writers some photographs. They have a system of distributing the photographs among their members sight unseen so the writer only sees their allocated image on receipt.
The writing can be thought provoking, or amusing. The writer might construct a story around the photograph, or produce something informative or reflective.
This year we closed the evening by remembering Val Pöhler, an artist, writer and Falkirk Writers Circle member since the 1980’s who was involved in the formation of the event at the very beginning and a regular contributor since. Val passed away just as preparations for this season’s event were beginning. We chose a photograph by Derek Forrest and a poem by Val entitled Selfie from 2017’s Talking Pictures which was read by Jean Currie.
Thursday 3rd April ……………
…………… brings our Print and Projected Digital Image of the Year night. Club members have chosen images from this seasons Monthly Competition entries for this final competition of our 2024 – 2025 season. It’s an opportunity to receive a critique of our images from an accredited Scottish Photographic Federation judge and be freshly inspired for the summer months.
Take care, and thanks for looking in.
