Weekly Roundup – 9th November

1st Monthly Competition

Following a review of our competition format by club members,  it’s all change this season.  There are now 3 Monthly Competitions,  one each in Autumn,  Winter and Spring with the results of the Autumn competition being delivered last Thursday night.  One of the benefits of clubs with a particular interest is the informal exchange of information on the subject in question,  often during the tea and coffee break.  Entries to club competitions however go to an accredited judge a few weeks before they visit the club to deliver their critiques of the photographs to the photographers.

It’s a great learning experience as observations by the judge on other photographs can often benefit everyone.  Ultimately the object is to produce images with which we are personally happy so a little advice can go a long way.

Our judge this time was Brian Cathie DPAGB  LRPS  EFIAP/b  GPUcr2  BPE*3 from Queens Park C.C. in Glasgow.  Those Distinctions were either awarded to Brian for demonstrating artistic and technical skill,  or for photographs being accepted into International Salons and Exhibitions of Photography.

The competition results will shortly be available on our website under Competitions > Results > Season 2025 – 2026 Image Scores > Autumn.

Scottish National Portrait Gallery

The Weekly Roundup for week ending 26th October mentioned the exhibition at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery on the pioneering aviation photography of Alfred Buckham  ( 1879 – 1956 ).  In addition to a collection of his photographs there are other interesting exhibits,  so it might just be mentioned again in these columns.  Below is one of his cameras which,  as previously mentioned,  uses glass plates.

Thursday 13th November

At our next meeting we welcome Paul McDougall. A Workshop and Tour Leader specialising in photographing wildlife he travels widely mentoring small groups of photographers.

Thanks for looking in.
