Weekly Roundup – 23rd November

Learning about the technical and artistic aspects of photography, both informally and formally, and sharing ideas and knowledge about photography is what we do. Our club Constitution puts it a bit more officially:  The principle purpose of the Club is the advancement of the art,  heritage,  culture and science of photography.

Thursday 20th November

Last Thursday night we welcomed our friends from Stirling & District Camera Club for our annual friendly competition.  Our two clubs have been meeting together at least twice a year since 1958 so this is one of our most treasured collaborations.  It’s always interesting to see photographs from other camera clubs and we have several connections with other clubs making this possible.

The judge this year was Tracey Ross from Irvine Camera Club.  Tracey’s considered and encouraging comments were appreciated by everyone.  Each image was carefully analysed from a photographer’s viewpoint and suggestions made in a positive and helpful way.   Congratulations to Stirling & District C.C. who were this year’s winners.

Photography in November

Early morning mists can be a feature of this time of year,  and the early sunset can create some interesting lighting.  If the lighting is a bit flat then this year is a good time to visit a gallery.  Resistance,  an exhibition exploring moments of social and political change from the early 20th century onwards,  is at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art  ( Modern 2 ) until 4th January 2026.  Location is about 15 minutes walk from Haymarket Rail Station in Edinburgh,  book your visit through  www.nationalgalleries.org   Members visit free,  otherwise charges apply.  The pioneering aviation photography of Alfred Buckham is at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery until 19th April 2026.  Admission free,  and there is an interactive lightbox where you can create composite images from AB’s negatives.  Location is about 10 minutes walk from Waverley Station in Edinburgh.

This Thursday we are delighted to welcome Jacki Gordon.  Shortlisted several times,  and in multiple categories,  in the British Photography Awards Jacki’s portfolio extends from Macro, to Food and Wildlife photography.  In addition to those BPA successes her photographs have been Highly Commended in both the World Food Photography Awards and the Bird Photographer Of the Year awards.  This promises to be a fascinating evening.
