Workshops
Last Thursday night we held two workshops. Steve Sommerville demonstrated close-up photography with club members given the opportunity to try it for themselves. It was fascinating to see the results which could be achieved from photographing a variety of objects and Steve’s use of continuous lighting brought a new dimension to the process.
The word ‘ photography ‘ literally means drawing with light. It was coined by Sir John Herschel at the dawn of the medium and in the other workshop Catherine Anderson and Ronnie Anderson demonstrated how the photographer’s imagination can be exercised by literally drawing patterns in the air with light. Intricate patterns and globes within globes can be created and perfected with nothing but light sources and your imagination.
When photography changed from a chemical to a digital pursuit it began a change in the social impact of the medium almost as great as the introduction of photography itself. In addition, in a digital world the photographer can examine the image on the LCD screen of a camera almost immediately, and the effect of in-camera adjustments can often be seen in an electronic viewfinder before the shutter release is pressed.
This is vastly different from the photographer having to wait a week while their film was developed, or even when they might develop the film then print selected negatives themselves within a couple of days. Experimentation of different techniques is able to be measured straight away and almost 30 years after consumer digital cameras appeared improved sensitivity and characteristics of digital cameras has enabled the creation of images which would have stretched the capabilities of film, and that’s before we talk about post-processing. All of this was evident during Thursday nights workshops as Steve, Catherine and Ronnie demonstrated.
Thursday 27th February
This Thursday we welcome Clive Watkins from Troon. Working in both Black & White and Colour, Clive’s portfolio extends from Still Life and Close Up photography to Landscapes, Portraiture, Sport and Wildlife. An experienced tutor and mentor with extensive post processing experience this promises to be a highly instructive evening.
Take care and thanks for looking in.
