Weekly Roundup – 25th October

Themed Competition

The first competition of this 2026 – 2027 took place last Thursday night.  It was our Themed competition which has the aim of encouraging us to photograph something outside of our usual range of subjects.  There is a choice of two themes in order to help enable club members avoid a theme which falls within their usual portfolio.

Industrial Heritage Scotland unearthed a huge variety of subjects from ancient structures through to more modern achievements.  Close Up / Macro photography offered photographers the chance to simply move in close to a subject,  or to enter the Macro world and uncover the fine detail of an insect,  flower,  or other object.

Competitions also allow photographers to benefit from feedback from another photographer.  We should always seek to produce images which please ourselves,  and improving our individual skills through listening to the opinion of other photographers is one way to do that.  In a club environment we can seek additional views from colleagues too adding to the experience.

Judges either come from other photographic clubs,  from the Scottish Photographic Federation,  or from other specialised sources.  Last Thursday night we were pleased to welcome the judge for this first competition of the season,  Callum Collie from Ayr Photographic Society.  His comments were clear,  always constructive and encouraging,  and Callum always sought to think about what the photographer was trying to portray and achieve.  It was a hugely instructive and motivating evening and was enjoyed by all.

The results will be posted under the Competitions tab on our website.
