Weekly Roundup – 28th April

Thursday 25th April was the final night of the 2023 – 2024 season so,  thank you to everyone who has contributed to our club over the past year.  Visiting lecturers and competition judges give of their time and expertise while many club members volunteer to ensure everything pulls together.  Our next season of weekly meetings begins on Thursday 12th September so hope to see you there.

Last Thursday we were joined by Historian,  Ian Scott.  Ian’s illustrated talk on the growth of Falkirk through the ages,  and its people and buildings,   was packed with knowledge and understanding on how the town has grown and changed.  Ian’s research has unearthed many photographs of Falkirk and its people.  It was fascinating to see the appearance,  and withdrawal,   of trams and to see a photograph of Sir Winston Churchill’s visit to the town.  Many of us could remember a High Street packed with cars and people at a time before indoor shopping malls and when Howgate Lane led to the swimming baths.

Ian showed A View From Falkirk High,  the view from just above Falkirk High railway station and painted by artist David Octavius Hill in 1851.  In addition to being an accomplished artist himself,  D.O.H. was a leading figure in the administrative side of the Art world in Scotland in the 19th century.  He was also known for his photographic partnership with Robert Adamson between 1843 and 1847.  While Adamson was the photographer and technician Hill provided much of the artistic input to their compositions.  Sincere thanks to Ian for his presentation.

A few weeks ago Libby Smith,  multi award winning photographer from Carluke C.C., judged our Print & Projected Digital Image of the Year competition for this season.  Libby holds several roles within the Scottish Photographic Federation and is one of the most experienced and knowledgeable people in the photographic community in the UK.  Our thanks to Libby for sharing her expertise.  Our final results for this past season are:
