About Us
Club President Dave Ferguson LRPS welcomed everyone to the first meeting of the season last Thursday night. He explained how the club worked, talked about the member organisations of which we are part, and introduced the Trustees and Management Team. We have two vacancies on the M.T. and seek a new Internal Competition Secretary and a new Public Relations Secretary. Speaking about the season ahead Dave highlighted a presentation on 3rd December by Gordon Jenkins and Wendy Stowell, both highly accomplished photographers from Lancashire. Their presentation will form the first Joan Clarke Memorial Lecture, held in memory of a much missed club member.
Speaking about club competitions, Dave explained that they are an excellent mechanism for receiving feedback on our photographs. Demonstrating how to resize an image for competitions he explained that while AI had been part of post processing programmes for a long time, they worked with existing information within a file. AI generated images, or constituent parts of an image, were not allowed.
Dave ended his presentation by talking about the other photographic clubs we visit and took the audience on a tour of our website. It was a hugely informative presentation and appreciated by club members old and new.
Summer Photo Walks
Following a break for tea & coffee the club’s Web Controller Stuart Pearson took the audience on a photographic journey around, mostly local, locations visited by club members on club Photo Walks during the summer. The Kelpies, Zetland Park ( illustrating an interesting insect within ) and Polmont Woods were all nearby. Not too far away club members had visited Bo’ness Foreshore, The Pineapple near Airth and Culross with Plean Country Park and Devilla Forest also visited. The Scottish Lavender Farm near Kinross was an interesting visit too.
Falkirk Writer’s Circle and Falkirk Camera Club Exhibition
Our joint exhibition with Falkirk Writer’s Circle is on now in the ground floor Turret Gallery in Callendar House, entry is free and open from 10am to 5pm. Closed on Tuesdays.
Looking Back
As an active camera club we know that it’s the photographer who takes the photograph, the type of camera used is not important and is just the means to an end. It is interesting to look back at the equipment used by the high proficient photographers of yesteryear and one of those was Alfred Buckham ( 1879 – 1956 ), a highly successful and innovative early 20th century aviator and photographer who was born in London but based nearby during part of his career. Find information on him online. He was the subject of a major exhibition in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery where they also featured one of his cameras, below. A bit different from today’s smartphones, bridge, and mirrorless cameras !
