Opening Lecture
Last Thursday night we welcomed our first visiting lecturer of our new season. Eddie Telford from Ayr Photographic Society is a highly accomplished photographer and judge, and co-incidentally will return later this year to judge our first Monthly Competition of the season. Co-incidentally, one of Eddie’s early assignments in his non-photographic career was to visit Falkirk periodically to photograph the progress of building work on the high flats in Callendar Park.
The title of Eddie’s presentation on Thursday was Remember Photography is Fun. He started his presentation by explaining that while many photographers exhibited their work, and enjoyed entering competitions, we all took photographs because we enjoyed the process and looking at the results of our own efforts. Eddie spoke too about the humour which a photograph could convey, and illustrated that with a photograph of a garden birdhouse built from corks from wine bottles.
His photographic portfolio is extremely wide. A Kingfisher with a freshly caught minnow and a Puffin with a bill full of sand eels were expertly composed, as was a Little Owl photographed in the wild. Sport is another of Eddie’s topics and his images of Golf were highly creative. A photograph of a golfer, mid shot, playing out of a bunker with sand in the air and motion in the golf club was one example. Dunure, south of Ayr on the Ayrshire coast, is a photogenic location with the remains of the castle, the harbour, and Ailsa Craig 10 miles off the coast in the background. Eddie’s excellent photographs of the area in various lighting conditions were inspiring.

Fabrizio Gianni
Also this week some club members attended an In Conversation event at the University of Stirling. The subject was Fabrizio Gianni, an Assistant Director in some of the most successful movies of the 1960’s and 1970’s who then became an acclaimed fashion photographer. Part of the Stirling Photography Festival, Fabrizio was in conversation with John Carberry, lecturer from the City of Glasgow College. The adjoining gallery also features an exhibition of his highly stylish photographs.

On Thursday 24th September we welcome Peter Paterson FRPS MPAGB. Peter is a specialist Landscape photographer, who also covers other subjects, making a much anticipated return visit to our club.
