David Mould, a past winner of the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year award was our guest last Thursday night. Widely published, over a variety of publications, David photographs the landscape of Scotland in all its shapes and forms and in all weather conditions. Whether he is seeking to catch the first rays of the sun, or the last glimmer of light before darkness falls, David’s photographs convey his artistic impressions of our widely varying countryside. “ It is knowledge that puts you in the right place to make the image “ he told us. Add to that his exceptional understanding of the technical side of photography, a never-ending curiosity about its possibilities and an intrinsic appreciation of how the light behaves and reacts with the landscape.
David’s photographs reflect the textures of the landscape too, and to further explore that tactile character of his images, he has become expert in the Photo Encaustic Process. The process has its foundations in ancient times as Homer recorded the Greeks using such a process to apply colour to their boats. David illustrated how he combines beeswax and damar resin with his Prints to produce highly evocative and atmospheric pieces of art. Our audience was captivated by his presentation.
There are many different genres and aspects of photography. Some amuse, some are a cause for wonder, and some touch us more deeply. For us, this is a time for the latter.
