Weekly Roundup – 4th December

It was announced on Thursday night that,  due to judging arrangements,  next weeks Monthly Competition No 3 night will be held online and not at Falkirk Bowling Club.  Looking ahead the hand-in date for Monthly Competition No 4 is 26th January 2023 while the final submission date for  3 From 6  is 19th January 2023.  The PhotoEntry bucket for  3 From 6  is open now.

Our lecturer last Thursday was David Queenan,  one of Scotland’s leading photographers who regularly features among the award winners in the Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year competition among others.  He has also provided photographs used on commemorative First Day Covers for the Post Office while his photographs also appear in national newspapers and associated publications as well as on his own website.

Talking us through a stunning portfolio of photographs,  David took the time to explain how he approached his photography and the techniques involved.  Using a combination of his own experience and research David aims to be at his chosen location well before the light is at its optimum.  This often means leaving home in the early hours of the morning in order to be onsite ahead of sunrise,  giving him time to select his composition.

Photographs of the Queensferry Crossing under construction,  with cranes emerging from a river Forth shrouded in fog were particularly pertinent for last weeks weather conditions.  Moving out into the estuary,  the Bass Rock photographed from Seacliffe Beach was an imposing structure.  Inland,  Standing Stones at Glen Lyon illustrated the mystery of generations long gone while the illumination around the lighthouse at St Abbs demonstrated the photographers control.

David illustrated the benefits of re-visiting locations in varying weather conditions and helpfully explained his processes regarding exposure and focusing.  Demonstrating that we needn’t travel too far,  his photographs along the coastline at Bo’ness were particularly striking and his creative approach to Still Life was notable.

This was an informative and inspiring evening and we look forward to inviting David back to Falkirk in the future.

Our next meeting at Falkirk Bowling Club will be on 5th January 2023 when we welcome Charles Everitt,   a prolific photographer who specialises in working with natural light.

Take care,  thanks for looking in,  and hope your camera is taking advantage of the lighting conditions caused by the low winter sun …………… when it’s visible     🙂
